Pomes Penyeach

Pomes Penyeach is a collection of 13 love poems written over the twenty years from 1904 to 1924. Originally published in 1927 it sold for one shilling – which was twelve old pennies – so the poems cost a penny each with one extra free. At the time it was customary for Irish tradespeople to offer their customers a “tilly” or extra serving which is why the first poem is called “Tilly”. The title is a play on the words pommes(apples) and poems, so apples a penny each and as their is one free or a ‘Tilly’, thirteen in all.
